Founded in 1898, the York Symphony
Orchestra is the city's oldest amateur orchestra. Its aim is to give amateur
musicians in York and the surrounding area the opportunity to rehearse and perform
works from the orchestral repertoire. It is particularly keen to encourage younger
players, and many of its soloists are young musicians with links to York. The
orchestra meets weekly for rehearsals and gives three concerts each year, in
November/December, March, and June/July.
